FAQ
Questions parents ask us.
Safety and health
Is San Juan del Sur safe for families?
We've spent our own summers here with our children, and we only work with partners we know and trust: the properties, Tambran International School and local providers. Your airport transfer is arranged door to door, and local support is available throughout your stay. We encourage every family to review the current U.S. State Department travel advisory for Nicaragua before booking, and we're happy to talk it through on your call.
What happens if someone gets sick or hurt?
We partner with a local clinic in San Juan del Sur for everyday illnesses and minor injuries. For anything serious, we arrange transport to a hospital in Managua, about two and a half hours away. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended.
Do we need travel insurance?
We strongly recommend it, including medical coverage and, ideally, cancel-for-any-reason coverage. Deposits and payments after 45 days before arrival are non-refundable.
Your group
How many families are in each group?
Each group is small, with one family per casa or apartment, so it feels like a community, not a tour. At Pelican Eyes, that means no more than six families.
Can grandparents, a nanny or another family join us?
Yes. Casas and apartments sleep up to 4 or 6 guests, depending on the unit. Tell us who's coming on your call and we'll match you with the right space.
What ages is this best for?
Kids 4 to 13 get the most out of camp and the group. Younger children and teens are welcome too: nanny care for the little ones, surf and Spanish for the older ones.
Do my kids have to attend camp?
No. Camp at Tambran is optional and booked by the day. Choose a full week, a few days, or none at all.
Daily life
Can I work remotely?
Yes. Every unit has wifi, and La Santa María has a shared co-working space. Nicaragua stays on Central Standard Time year-round, so in summer it's one hour ahead of California.
Do we need a car?
Not for everyday life. Taxis are easy and inexpensive for getting around town and back up the hill. If you'd like weekend trips to places like Granada or Ometepe, a rental car helps, and we can add one to your quote.
What about food?
Every unit has a full kitchen. Shop the fresh catch of the day and the local markets, or eat out at the restaurants in town. Meals are not included in your stay.
Do we need to speak Spanish?
No. English is common in town, and our team helps you get settled. Most families leave speaking more Spanish than when they arrived, especially the kids.
Booking and travel
How does booking work?
Book a free call and tell us who's coming. We'll send a pricing sheet for your family's size and stay. Reserve with a 25% non-refundable deposit, with the balance due 45 days before arrival.
How do we get there?
Fly into Managua (MGA). Your transfer to San Juan del Sur, about two and a half hours by road, is included and arranged for you.
What do we need to enter Nicaragua?
Everyone, including children, needs a valid passport. Entry requirements vary by nationality, so please confirm yours before booking flights.
